The ninth and final day of Navaratri is dedicated to Goddess Siddhidatri, the supreme goddess who grants siddhis—divine powers, wisdom, and spiritual perfection. Her name combines Siddhi (supernatural ability or spiritual attainment) and Datri (giver), meaning “the one who bestows spiritual powers and enlightenment.”
The Story of Goddess Siddhidatri
According to Hindu mythology, when the universe was formless, Lord Shiva worshipped Adi-Parashakti to gain the eight great siddhis—Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakamya, Ishitva, and Vashitva. Pleased with his devotion, Goddess Siddhidatri appeared and blessed him with these powers. It is believed that she resides in the Sahasrara (crown) chakra, bestowing ultimate realization and liberation to her devotees.
Another legend says that it was Siddhidatri who created the Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, giving them the energy to create, sustain, and destroy the cosmos. Because of her grace, even the gods could perform their divine duties.
Iconography & Symbolism
Goddess Siddhidatri is depicted seated on a lotus or a lion, radiating divine calmness. She has four arms: holding a mace, a discus, a lotus, and a conch shell. She is dressed in red or pink attire, symbolizing love and universal energy. She represents the pinnacle of devotion, granting not only material success but also the ultimate spiritual goal—moksha (liberation).
